Roof shingle estimates are often wrong when people use the flat house footprint instead of the sloped roof surface. This calculator applies a pitch-based slope factor for you.
Pitch adds area
A 6/12 or 8/12 roof has more surface area than the flat footprint. The calculator uses rise and run to estimate that increase.
Field shingles only
Bundle estimates here are for field shingles. Starter, ridge cap, flashing, vents, and accessories are separate.
Complex roofs waste more

Why does roof pitch change shingle quantity?
A pitched roof has more surface area than the flat building footprint. The calculator applies a slope factor from the roof pitch so you do not need to calculate the rafter length yourself.
Does this include ridge cap and starter shingles?
No. It estimates field shingle bundles. Starter, ridge cap, flashing, underlayment, ventilation, and accessories should be figured separately.
Common roof shingle examples
These examples show how to think about real searches before you buy shingles or compare a roof quote.
1,200 sq ft roof
If you already know the sloped roof area is about 1,200 sq ft, divide by bundle coverage and add waste. For a typical 33.3 sq ft bundle, that is about 36 bundles before waste and about 40 bundles with 10% waste.
1,500 sq ft roof
A 1,500 sq ft sloped roof is about 45 bundles before waste at 33.3 sq ft per bundle. Hips, valleys, dormers, or cut-up areas can push that higher.
2,000 sq ft roof
A 2,000 sq ft sloped roof is about 60 bundles before waste at 33.3 sq ft per bundle. Remember that starter shingles and ridge cap are separate.
Shed or garage roof
For a simple shed or garage, measure the footprint, enter the pitch, and use a higher waste factor if there are overhangs, rake cuts, or small-section inefficiency.
Roofing reality check
This estimates field shingle bundles, not the complete roof job. A real roofing quote can include many items that are not in a bundle count.
